Thursday Thirteen

1. I'm a picky eater, so yes, there are thirteen foods. And some of them I'll admit are weird. Like COFFEE. I hate coffee. I really want to like it--it SMELLS so good, but it tastes like tar mixed with eau de roadkill. And what adult in America doesn't like coffee? Me. That's it. Just me. 2. Eggs. I used to eat them all the time when I was little, and now I can't stand the taste unless they're scrambled and buried under a mountain of ketchup and hash browns. 3. Egg salad. I see it, especially SMELL it, and I will lose whatever happens to be in my tummy at the time. I kid you not. 4. Brussel sprouts. I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in this. They look like little shrunken heads and they taste like farts. Gross, but true. 5. Peas. I'll gonna ick you out a bit and admit I can't stand these because it feels like little zits are popping in my mouth when I eat them. 6. Onions. I like them cooked because they take on the flavor of whatever you cooked them with, but raw? Ewwwwww. And they leave their pungent flavor behind. When they come on a salad I have to pick them off AND anything that's touched them. Contamination, I tell you. All that lettuce was fraternizing with the enemy. 7. Fish. I looks good, it even smells good. And all those cooking shows that say almost crusted salmon in a raspberry glaze make my tongue long to try it. Alas and alack, I have yet to experience fish that didn't taste like...well, fish. 8. Lamb. Let me qualify this. I LOVE lamb when it's prepared in the Greek style with all those yummy spices. Any other way is just foul (and I don't mean the bird kind here, either). 9. Sweet pickles. Give me crunchy, spicy, kosher dills. That other stuff need not apply. 10. Sweet potatoes. My grams just loves these any which way they come. Me? Not so much. They taste like potatoes that are trying too hard to be dessert. And that's just not right. 11. Tiramisu. I'm willing to admit that perhaps I've never had this prepared well, but every time I've had it the texture...or something...has just been a bit off. I can't put my finger on it. 12. Brown rice. It tastes like dirt. 13. Raisins. But only sometimes. I have an on-again/off-again relationship with the shriveled grape. Y'all are never inviting me over to your house for dinner, are you? I'm a very good guest, really! I'll eat whatever's put in front of me. The only tell I have is that if I hate it, I drink a lot of water with every bite. And then I'll need to use your bathroom. You've got company on the brussels sprouts and onions. The others...? Well, food is always the ultimate personal choice.
ROFL - your list is hilarious. I can definitely tell you're a writer...you managed to gross me out on foods I even LOVE!
I'm telling you! I know it's gross, but I can't get past it. Gah!
Finicky, thy name is Crystal. How can you hate coffee? Have you tried putting liquor in it? Creamer? Chocolate? Mocha Lattes are my definition of Heaven. Although I'm with you on the brown rice. Wild is fine, white is fine-brown may be the healthiest-but it tastes like nature's punishment.
Brown rice is foul. And my brothers (all three of them, PLUS their coffee addict friends) made me try a new flavor of coffee every week for a year in an effort to find one I liked. No dice.
That's too funny. Each food was either one I detested myself or absolutely loved. Like sweet pickles, love them. lol
I'm with you on everything but the coffee, lol. Maybe because I was exposed to it on "the farm" growing up and it poured as thick as tar... ah, great memories, lol--no, kids weren't drinking it, just grew up with the smell.
Uh, you left the yard bird off that list. ;)
I used to hate mushrooms until I learned that I love them if they are fried up in butter. Lots of it! In fact, most foods taste better slathered in something. :)
I love coffee and used to drink it everyday. It no longer likes me though, so I had to switch to tea. :(
You're very sensitive to food textures, huh? I never met a fish I liked. Bleck.
Um, well, I'd agree with you on all of them.
Except the coffee - but when I drink coffee it's mostly lots of milk/flavoring with just a little bit of coffee.
I also just recently started eating sweet potatoes, but only sweet potato fries and only with LOTS of salt.
Otherwise, yeah, I agree with everything.
I hate to tell you this, Crys, but I like everything on your list, and adore quite a few of them. Fish, especially, is something I can't live without. My favorite is southern-fried catfish. And lamb -- oh, I love it any way I can get it!
Obviously, I've never been a finicky eater... :D
So what's the deal with the links? Are we supposed to add them every week?
I'm with you on the coffee.
Sam: Sweet pickles. I just threw up in my mouth a little.
Michelle: See? I LOVE the smell. cannot stand the taste. I've tried I really have.
Lori: No, I like yard bird. it tastes like chicken.
Christine: Oh! I forgot mushrooms. I hate them too. LOL.
Ciar: No fish! Ewwww.
Emma: Yay! Someone with my weird food fetishes!
Robin: I can't help myself! I don't want to be picky. But it's gross!
Robin 2: Yeah, add you links into the box at the bottom of my post once a week so I can click and come comment to you.
Sonja: Really? Woohoo! Down with coffee!
I've never eaten a fart so I don't know what they taste like, however, I loathe brussels sprouts, they are nasty. Oh and raisins are gross too.
I don't mind brown rice in things like caseroles though
LOL. Another VERY picky eater here! I finished reading and though - what? Mushrooms aren't on this list!? FUNGUS is not on this list?? Glad to see they were added.
I like coffee, eggs and tiramasu. The rest make me gag.
Lauren: LOL. Okay, okay. Be literal about it.
Elle: Sorry for the fungus among us omission.
You know, I thought the hubby and I were the only people in the world that don't like coffee! It's good to see we're not the only ones. :)
I saw a survey that found 10% of people don't like coffee but 75% of that 10% will drink it because they don't want to stand out as not liking it. I'll stick to not drinking it.
Yolanda: You're so not in it alone! I'm right there with you.
impworks: I often SAY I'll go with someone to have coffee and then "change my mind" at the last minute and get tea or hot cocoa. Yeah, I'm a big girl like that.
I'm with ya on the coffee. I love the way it smells but can't bring myself to drink it- so bitter!
Kissa: And just so narsty!
I could never understand how coffee could smell so good and taste so bad - then I discovered Cappuccino! Brussel sprouts would be on my list too.
No, I even hate Cappucino. I can't help it. I even hate coffee flavored ice cream. And I love ice cream.
Ok we have quite a few in common. I'm with you on eggs. Cover them in cheese and bacon and all kinds of stuff and I can deal.
And tiramisu, yeah, does nothing for me.
There you go, Shelli. Yay!
Oh God! My mother's roast leg of lamb is to die for! Brussels sprouts on the other hand....
LOL. I can't live without coffee, egs and tiramisu!! But I'm not a fan of egg salad (I can't stand mayo) peas (to me, they're tasteless) fish/lamb (I'm vegetarian) or sweet pickles. Gotta love a nice crunchy dill. Deelish! =)
Keziah: Does your mom roast it Greek style? Because I'm on my way over for dinner if she does.
Erica: Peas ARE tasteless and the texture, like I said, is just Not Right.
Tiramisu is made with coffee, so I can see why you wouldn't like it...
but it's one of my favorite things! Yummy to me (says a current coffee fanatic!).
LOL- well, that would explain it. I didn't know that.
I'll agree with about half of that list: coffee (I agree, smells good, tastes horrid), onions (except I don't like 'em cooked either), fish, lamb, rice (reminds me of maggots) and egg salad.
I love brussel sprouts. And sweet potatoes. *g*
